  • Description:   At the core of College Mennonite Church's life together is a strong commitment to worship and spiritual growth. A variety of care networks provide for face-to-face relationships. The church fosters a broad nurture and fellowship program with settings for all ages and interests as well as inter-generational relationships. College Mennonite Church is committed to the Christian education of children and youth, including them in the worship services and providing a variety of church-related activities for them. Helping persons grow to be Christ-like is the goal of Sunday school teachers and mentors. CMC has around 1,084 members with a team of eight ministers (6 FTE). It also serves a large number of others in its "parish." CMC has a high number of professionals in its membership, reflecting the way it draws many new members fromMennonite-related organizations in the community. A 1993 analysis showed that about 37% of regular participants in CMC congregational life were above age 60, reflecting the large number of new members CMC draws from the growing retirement population in the community.

History:   Organized in 1903, College Mennonite Church has been a congregation characterized by strong ministerial and lay leadership, its relationship with Goshen College, and its commitment to Christian education and service. The congregation began as a response to the needs of the faculty and students at Goshen College. Financial and administrative diffficulties at Goshen College, as well as strained conference-college relations, became factors in conference-congregation relations which led to a painful dissolution and re-formation of College Mennonite Church in 1924. From the 1920s into the early1950s congregational leadership continued to come from leaders in college administration. In 1955 John Mosemann, who had been working for both CMC and GC, became the congregation's first full-time minister. Until 1960, when its membership approached 700, CMC had no separate meeting facility and met in college facilities. A joint venture of the congregation and college, the church current church building (expanded by the congregation in 1993) has housed a growing congregation. From its beginning CMC has maintaned an active Sunday school program for all ages. It also has had a strong women's organization. Internal fellowship and caring has been important to CMC. The congregation has enjoyed strong musical leadership and traditions throughout its history.
