Description:   First Mennonite is an Anabaptist urban, university congregation of persons from many Mennonite and other Christian backgrounds. Persons participate in a blended worship program and develop a sense of belonging.

History:   First Mennonite began in the mid 60's when Mennonite Student Fellowship and Mennonite families in the community joined together. The congregation has grown over the years and presently has about 125 persons present on a Sunday morning. Many persons also come from non-Mennonite backgrounds to enrich our common life together. Though many have some connection to the University of Illinois, others drive in from surrounding communities. We say many hellos and goodbyes, but the majority of folks are long-term residents of the community. Our staff includes a full-time pastor, half-time associate pastor, a part-time accountant, and half-time administrative assistant. From the beginning, we have been a dually affiliated congregation.
