History: Amish Mennonites began moving into northwest Champaign County, Illinois, in 1882. Minister Peter Zehr moved to the settlement from Tazewell County in 1889 and started services in the Dixon schoolhouse. In 1895 the group built a church near the East Bend of the Sangamon River. Originally all rural, East Bend Mennonite Church members number 300 and are people of many occupations.
